Basics of bending machines worth knowing about

Posted by Eng. Abdel Karim on

The primary purpose of the bending machine is to bend and form the metal or a workpiece. There are many types of bending machines depending on the requirement of the job. Some common types of bending machines are – bar bending machine, sheet bending machine, manual tube bending machine, and profile bending machine, to name a few.

If you are planning to buy a bending machine, then it would help if you know the basics of bending machines. Understanding how the machine works will not only enable you to use it efficiently, but you will also be able to purchase the right tool for the job. Please keep reading further as this blog shares with you the fundamentals of a bending machine.

Bar bending gets done most effectively with an automatic steel bar bending machine. It’s because manual bending is impractical today; it’s not only inconsistent, but it also makes scaling difficult. Some bending device requires employees for operating the machine. They need to set the tools and operate the machine manually.

There are many components put to use in the machine while bending. To achieve the right bend, you need to ensure that each component gets set precisely. The parts are as follows:

1 – Bend, clamp, and pressure die

Bend die is responsible for forming the tube and decides the radius of the bend. There are some default die configurations, and pedestal and flange mount bend die too. The type of arch you require will determine which bend die is fit for the task.

2 – Wiper die

Wiper die supports the tube or a bar on the inside of the bend to avoid wrinkles. Steel wiper dies are appropriate for bending steel, copper, aluminum, and bronze metal. Whereas bronze/aluminum is useful for turning stainless, titanium, etc.

3 – Mandrel

A mandrel is a component that supports inside of the tube to prevent wrinkles and protects them from collapsing during bending. Apart from standard pitch mandrels, close pitch mandrels are perfect for thin wall tubing, and tight radius bends around the tube.

To summarize

A bend dies, clamp dies, pressure dies, wiper dies, and mandrels are the essential components of a bending machine. And today, there are so many engineering machines for sale online which are efficient for the job. The information mentioned above will surely help you understand the basics of the bending machine and help you buy the right tool.
